Early measuring tapes were made of cloth and were known as cloth tapes. Over time, these cloth tapes could become inaccurate, necessitating verification to prevent disputes in market transactions and ensure compliance with national standards. The “standard tape measure,” left over from the Japanese period, was used in Taiwan during that time and in the early post-war years as a verification tool to check the accuracy of cloth tapes at the Provincial Weights and Measures Testing Institute.
