The Fortin mercury barometer, invented in 1810, measures atmospheric pressure using mercury. It was likely used during the Japanese period for monitoring laboratory conditions. Today, some mountain weather stations under the Central Weather Bureau still use it, primarily for calibration purposes. The pressure measured by the barometer is referred to as “observed pressure.” After corrections for gravity, temperature, and instrument differences, this becomes “station pressure.” The “station pressure” is then adjusted according to the station’s elevation to derive “sea level pressure.”
